Don’t let the miracles that haven’t happened yet blind you to the ones that already have!

Memory has been a problem for mankind since the dawn of time. We get so caught up in the needs and anxieties of the moment that we forget the providence and provisions of the past.

I cannot even count how many times in my life I have found myself in a situation where only a miracle could make it right. I’ve not been able to pay bills or buy groceries, I’ve had the water turned off at the house, I’ve had to file bankruptcy. And those are just the financial messes I’ve been in. I remember the time when I couldn’t pay my bills, it was extremely scary and worrying. Paying bills are so important, so it’s vital to ensure you can always pay them. We thought, at one point, that we would get everything turned off in our house as we couldn’t pay for any of it. Thankfully, we’re in a better position now and we can afford to pay for our bills. We even make sure we pay them early by using the bill payment kiosk in our local retail store. They recently had a payment kiosk installed from https://kiosk.com/market-solutions/payment-kiosks/ and it has made so much difference to how people pay their bills and send money. We always see many people using it as it saves so much time. We’re so thankful that we can pay our bills on time now, there’s nothing worse than financial stress.

I know the kind of sleepless nights spent in a hospital room listening to the hums, pings, and beeps of machines keeping my daughter alive, begging, and pleading with God to save her life. I know the kind of pain that, 14 years after she died, it still brings tears to my eyes to even think about it. Even as I write this, today, I am in a personal battle with cancer. Trust me when I tell you I know what it’s like to need a miracle!

The miracles do come, though! Maybe not at the moment we are demanding them, and maybe not in the ways that we are expecting them, but they do come. The problem is pain, anxiety, and desperation produce mental myopia. All we can see is the present moment and the seemingly insurmountable need. The past becomes a blur and we fail to recall how far we have come and how the previously insurmountable needs in our lives have been solved.

I also love the fact that this problem is not unique to you or me and is not a modern, cultural phenomenon. A quick review of the Old Testament in the Bible will show you how quickly our forefathers forgot the miracles God performed and the provisions He made on their behalf. This is why they created landmarks, called Ebenezers, to remind them of what God had done at that location.

I have found bags of groceries on my front steps with no note or explanation; I’ve found envelops of cash in my mailbox that contained exactly the amount I needed for some bill that I had not told anyone about! I was even supposed to have been on American Airlines Flight 77 on September 11, 2001, but made a change in my schedule the week before–this was the flight that was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon. I cannot explain these things, other than to call them miracles!

Look back over your life at the obstacles you have overcome. I’ll bet some of them cannot be explained in any rational way. I’m sure you have experienced true miracles in your life. If you are struggling to find one, simply go look in a mirror. Given just how fragile life is and how dangerous this world can be, the fact that you are able to read this is, in my mind, a miracle.

If you need a miracle in your life today, do not lose hope. Don’t let the miracles that haven’t happened yet blind you to the ones that already have! I believe in miracles!

    Dear Bruce.
Your daily thoughts, not only represent a daily gift for us. It is real wisdom you have acquired by your struggle in life.
Thanks for sharing and letting us know, that sometimes our short view and concepto of life, is often just a paradigm, that lies to our senses.
Thanks for sharing your life struggle, which makes us value what we have.

Thanks for this shared experience and thought. Being an agnostic at best I must confess that these special things called miracles do exist, although sometimes they do not happen when they are needed most. I do not know what the driving force of these “miracles” is and I do not know why sometimes the opposite occurs in the form of extremely bad luck for some people.
By the way: I have read many blog posts in my life and this one really stands out from the crowd.
Wish you all the miracles in the world in fighting this terrible disease. And please keep writing these great posts!

    Bruce,
Thank you so much for this post. I’ll be praying for the miracle that you so desperately need. Although I have never experienced cancer, my family and I know what it is to go through some pretty rough and dark times. Often, when we were at the very bottom and were about to fall into despair unexplainable things occurred that turned our heaviness to joy. I am one who believes God still hears and still cares. Thank you again.

    Bruce,
I’ve had so many miracles happen to me in my life already is such a blessing. I’ve been at the bottom of a lake as a teenager where all possibilities of surviving were exhausted and then there was a light and I asked God please I want to see my friends that couldn’t help me one more time and somehow I had the power to get to the surface one more time. A friend calmed me down for panic mode and had me float on my back and I did the backstroke all the way to shore and while I was doing that we lost one friend. I hit a telephone pole at a 115 mph and was dead at the seen when paramedics arrived but then I started to through up blood and they resuscitated me for over 3 hours – four days later I woke up. Those are two of the so many miracles that have happened to me and I know God is helping me right now as I need one more. I just want to say thank you for sharing this article and to thank God once again.
    Jim
